On the Gerber Grow-up Plan

What a scam? This TV commercial really pisses me off. They go on and on about how you can protect your baby. What they are really selling is life insurance if your baby dies. That would be a terrible thing, of course, but it doesn't protect your baby in any way. What irks me is that they phrase it in all this colourful language about giving your baby this precious gift that nourishes and protects them. Nothing but shite, I say.

So it's life insurance. Don't we insure ourselves. Why not insure our children, or grandchildren, as we would ourselves? No one likes to think about dying. However, Gerber is only offering our children what they offer us as adults. Should that small child become a diabetic, for instance, later in life, they would not be able to get insurance. So why not buy it as an "investment".

At 8:32 a.m., Anonymous Anonymous said...

It is very misleading. Me & my husband decided to do it for our son, thinking that we would be putting away money for him(almost like a savings account with interest) that he could have access to when he's 21(that's what they make you think) but I come to find out it's nothing like that at all. That he doesn't get anything!! we get the insurance money only if he dies. Otherwise there is nothing there, He doesn't get anything!!! & you can't use it for anyhing else, even if they get sick, that's not what it's for!! it's no good!!! so it really isn't for "your child" it's for there profit apparently & god forbid your tragedy.(Which in our case we have other "family insurance" so again it is useless. I don't want to profit if my child died. Never once when I spoke to them or in any of there documents that they sent to me does it specify the real rules behind it, only when I read this comment board & called them & confronted them about it is when I was told!!!! I cancelled it immediately, if I knew that's what it was I would of never did it, we already have insurance coverage. We don't need that too!!!! It's not beneficial nor is it an investment!!!

Life insurance for children makes no sense. The reason we buy life insurance is to ensure that our dependents can be taken care of financially if we die. If you die, your income dies with you. Why would you insure a baby, who has no income and no dependents? If you get money if your baby dies, it won't bring your baby back. The idea of "locking in low rates" is a farce - why would you pay for something for a LONG time (from birth until your child has dependents of their own) just to get a discount 20 or 25 years from now? Save the money and you'll almost certainly come out ahead.

Obviously none of these people have lost a child. I lost a child when I was young. My husband and I were struggling financially. It is horrible to have to face paying for a funeral over a long period of time. It is a constant reminder of a tragedy.I have purchased this plan for all my grandchildren just so my children never have to go through what I did.I pray no person has to bury a child.

At 5:49 p.m., Anonymous Anonymous said...

The people who are saying this plan makes no sense are absolutely wrong and apparently are financially secure enough not to worry about funeral costs. I unfortunately am not so lucky. I don't want to profit from my child's death but I would like to give them a funeral that shows how much they mean to me.

At 12:15 p.m., Anonymous Rachel Humphrey said...

First off i see good reason to have insurance on children when a person dies not only do you loose income from them you also have to pay out to get them barried right and you want it to be a good barrieal and children if they die have to be barried too and how would someone feel if they had to pay to barrie a child 10yrs later nothing like a reminder of a payment. Next at 21yrs old the child has an option to get all the money back you have put in cash or continue to pay the monthly payments and continue the coverage. The only dif. is they don't pay the high amount adults do if they start when the get it started when they are grown up. So you have brought down their payments. Plus if they want to cash it out they can and use that money to get a car, downpayment on a car or college.. it's up to them. So i think it's a good idea.. i have it and will continue to get it.

At 8:38 a.m., Anonymous Anonymous said...

Rachel needs to set aside a little money for a dictionary... or use Google, it's free.

lose income NOT loose income
buried NOT barried
burial NOT barrieal
bury NOT barrie

If you are getting income from your child there are laws to protect your child from you.

You totally missed the flaw in the Gerber plan. You cannot "cash it out they can and use that money to get a car, downpayment on a car or college.. it's up to them."

It's term insurance, you only get paid if your child dies.

If funeral expenses are a concern you MIGHT want to consider this but you would probably be much better off looking into a policy such as the one you've described which has an savings/investment component.

At 7:25 a.m., Anonymous Anonymous said...

Gerber has both term and whole insurance plans. Whole DOES build cash value...BUT YOU HAVE TO KEEP UP THE PREMIUMS until maturity. After that maturity point, YOU CAN CASH OUT THE VALUE OF ALL PREMIUMS PAID and in some cases, with interest.

I would only suggest getting enough coverage for funeral expenses... It really doesn't make sense to beyond that.

It also gives your child the advantage of affording their own life insurance at a great rate especially if you have a history of disqualifying diseases in your family, That way, when your wee one is 30 and has children of their own, They don't have to worry about being able to afford it.

It's not for everyone, but is good for certain purposes. Most importantly though, Most parents run a greater risk of dying than their child. MAKE SURE YOU are covered enough that if you pass or become ill you have health and life insurance so your loved ones won't have to handle the financial mess while being broken hearted. If you can't afford this first, then life insurance for your child may not be right for you.

At 7:29 a.m., Anonymous Anonymous said...

I forgot to add, that if you are ONLY worried about covering funeral expenses, and aren't trying to give them a future extra safety net, Most people can add a rider onto their existing life insurance. Ask your company about it.

At 12:08 p.m., Anonymous Anonymous said...

First off, I agree with everyone worried about being abole to pay for funeral costs when we can't even pay our bills each month. But being that I have actuall gone through a class to learn about all the different types of insurance, please opt for term insurance, not whole life or anything that says it builds cash value. Because they don't, not really. Building cash value is supposed to be your money, like a savings account at a bank. But when was the last time you made a withdrawal from your bank and had to repay it with interest? Whole life policies make you do that. And, God forbid, you ever have to use the policy because someone passes away, you will get the cash value or the amount of the policy, whichever is less. Not both. And if you ever miss a premium payment, or are late, don't worry, they just take it out of your"cash value" account. If you can get your hands on the contract of any "cash value" policy, read every word, the good and the bad. And please don't be fooled again.

My grandchild was diagonized with type 1 diabetes at 2 years old -thank God I had purchased the Gerber grow up Plan for him at 1 year old-now he will beable to get affordable life insurance for himself when he is an adult-otherwise he would live without. I am very happy with this insurance and am about to purchase it for my second 5 month old grandson.

I purchased a WHOLE LIFE plan for my child upon some of his blood work coming back indicating an immune system disorder. Turns out that was the BEST choice I've ever made. He has since been diagnosed w/Selective IgA Deficiency & Hypogammaglobulinemia. Essentially his immune system doesn't function correctly & that will make him more susceptible to illness, particularly bacterial infections of the mucous membranes. Because he has been diagnosed with a "Primary Immune Deficiency Disease" or PIDD, he now has what is considered a "rare & deadly disease" even though his life expectancy is near normal. What all of this means is that he'll most likely be unable to obtain private life insurance as he gets older. So, he & his future family can have some peace of mind & $$ for funeral expenses, we bought him a policy. For us, the choice makes sense.

At 11:44 a.m., Anonymous Allandriel Leitrey said...

Not to get off topic, but I thought it important to correct the errors made in a previous anonymous post. You may have taken a class about various types of insurance, but a lot of your information is incorrect.

And I don't claim to know every detail about insurance. However, I am life insurance licensed and have worked in the industry for 15+ years.

First of all, the company you choose plays a large part in how well a cash value will perform. Historically, the big mutual companies (Northwestern Mutual, Mass Mutual, and New York Life)give the highest rate of return on your money. As an example, if you fund the policy for 20+ years, the cash value of Northwestern has historically earned approximately 8% on the money you put in.

You say to access the cash value in a whole life policy you have to pay it back with interest. That is incorrect. That is an option that many people choose in order to maintain the same level of death benefit and avoid paying taxes on their gains (which have grown tax-deferred, unlike in a bank account). But you are also able to pull the money out without paying it back. Yes, the death benefit will go down proportionally. However, compare it to a bank account which has no death benefit at all.

You are right about one thing. You don't get both the cash value and death benefit if you were to die. However, you don't get the one that is less. You get the death benefit, which will always be higher. Whole life policies are designed for the cash value to catch the death benefit at a certain age (usually 100 or 120, depending on the company). If you reach that point, they cut you a check for the amount while you're alive.

I'm not sure why you are bothered that if you miss a payment, they will pay it out of the cash value. Why would you want to lapse a policy because you missed one payment? If it's because you don't want to make the payments anymore, there are options. You could use the dividend to pay the premium for you. You could turn the policy paid-up so it will decrease the death benefit, but require no more payments. Also, you could just pull the money out, pay taxes on your gains, and forfeit the insurance.

All that being said, I don't think whole life insurance is always the right option. With the right company, it can be a good financial tool. However, the important thing is to consider your unique situation when making a recommendation. Usually, when someone makes a blanket statement such as annuities are terrible, always get term, roth IRA's are better than traditional IRA's etc., they don't realize that different situations warrant different solutions for a variety of reasons.

I will say this, life insurance companies only pay out on about 4% of their term insurance contracts, so 96% of people lose their term insurance before they die (due to age restrictions/increasing cost). I'm not saying it's always the best return on your money, but at least with whole life insurance, you can know that your money will not be wasted. Oh and back on topic, life insurance on children is very often a great idea. I don't think Gerber is a bad option, but usually I would suggest looking into a policy at the aforementioned companies as a comparison.

My brother died when he was 18 and it would have been nice if he had life insurance. It took my dad 5 years of payments to pay for the funeral and the burial. I have life insurance on my son and he is 6 months old. The plan is a whole life plan and if he chooses to cash it in when he gets older so be it. At least he is protected until then and he has guaranteed coverage no matter what. He can also choose to double his coverage when he turns 18 without a medical exam. That is very important to me because his fathers side of the family has history of cancer and heart disease.

Let me add some perspective here that I gained from experience. We purchased life insurance on our daughter when she was very young. Less than a year later she was diagnosed with Leukemia and after a very long battle, an experience I would not wish on even my worst enemy, we lost her. We had depleted our savings and in no shape to deal with losing a child, we had to deal with a funeral, etc. Instead of the joy of choosing a wedding dress for our beautiful daughter, we were choosing a casket. We were so thankful for the little pitance it cost to take care of a nice final goodbye for our precious daughter. Thank you Gerber Life!!

Ok.. MR. ANONYMOUS or MRS.. Why are you being a douche bag and picking on caring parents who post there feeling on here about baby life insurance. Most families in todays society don't have the extra money to start savings accounts for their children. Say you have three children and one dies, your on a fixed income or your husband gets laid off work do to the recession.. How can that family afford to get by.. paying bills and a funeral cost.. It's said that you don't think outside the box on things.. I have one child a beautiful baby boy.. we have a savings account for him, He's only one.. whose to say.. God Forbid that something happens to my little angel.. His money that we saved up for him isn't gonna come close to paying for a funeral.. so I personally think you need to shut your F*** mouth and stop picking on these poor families who choose to have life insurance for there babies... AND NO, I'm not a mom who has life insurance for my baby.. but that dosen't make me pick on poor people like Rachel about spell check .. and all that crap because she dosen't think like me.. This is my first time ever posting something on stuff like this, but the thought of someone being a dick on here just upsets me more than anything.. obviously you don't have children or could care less.. Maybe you should sit back and think about things before you open your mouth

My mother-in-law lost her child in 1968 due to a horrible accident. Because they were poor and had other children to feed, the city buried the boy so there was no funeral at all and they had no burial expenses. There also was no headstone or anything to mark the spot where he is buried. Years later, I took her there to try and remember where he was buried based on the view she saw at the time. We never found it and since my mother-in-law is Native American, the people in charge saw no reason to write the spot down anywhere. That is what drove me to make sure our children had insurance and our grandchildren also.....I never want to be the one looking for my child in that situation.

I cannot believe the ignorance I'm reading! SMH... To all the Anonymous cyber bullies Throwing stones at responsible parents who are trying to be finacially stable when it comes to thier baby . It's life insurance people! It means if there is no longer life they will give you the money that you singed up for. It's not gaining money off of you're dead child? Are u kidding me? You must not understand how funerals work. Which is why you're being so ignorant. Thousands of dollars are spent on a "proper" burial. It takes time away from work and not to mention just renting a place for service and casket's . How about a head stone? that 10-25,000.00 will be gone before you have to go back to work. God forbid you're child doesn't pass suddenly and you're forced to put them in a hospital or home care? Mr. Anonymous you're an asshole! Sincerly Amber from Chicago,IL
